The port development project is on the east bank of Sungei Pulai, south eastern tip of the State of Johor. The new Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) was developed to cater for containerised cargo at six new berths.
The first phase of the project was completed in early 1999 and studies had suggested that eleven berths will be needed by the year 2015. The projected 1999 throughput capacity was 3,700,000 TEU (equivalent to 2,400,000 containers) increasing to a predicted throughput of 4,000,000 TEUs (Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit) by the year 2015.
The 6 Nos berths were designed to cater for the latest generation of super post panama container vessels with an approach channel from the deep water of the Johor Straits and a turning basin. Berth and yard equipment provided in Phase 1 includes 24 ships to shore cranes and 47 rubber tyre gantry units.
Although initially catering for containerised cargo, the port has been planned to enable to respond to demand, by building appropriate terminals for handling other cargo types, i.e. liquid cargo, general cargo and dry bulks.
